Energy cells model

Results and Outputs

The Energy Cells Model delivers practical analytical results, decision-support insights, and a transferable modelling approach that strengthens regional energy planning capacities and supports the transition toward climate-neutral energy systems.

1. Functional modelling tool and simulations

Energy Cells Model (open_plan tool):
An interactive, user-friendly modelling environment that allows regions to design and simulate multi-energy systems integrating electricity, heat, gas, and hydrogen. Users can build scenarios, test different technology combinations, and instantly evaluate impacts on costs, renewable shares, and system autonomy.

The tool visualises complete energy systems, showing how energy is generated, stored, and consumed across sectors, enabling clear identification of optimal system configurations and bottlenecks.

2. Common methodology and modelling framework

The model applies a structured workflow combining scenario setup, system design, constraints, and simulation. This ensures consistency across analyses and allows regions to compare different development pathways.

By standardising inputs such as technical parameters, economic data, and time-series demand profiles, the model provides a replicable and comparable framework for regional energy planning.

3. Integrated energy datasets and sector coupling

The model integrates diverse datasets covering energy supply, infrastructure, and sectoral demand (households, industry, heating, hydrogen).

This enables a comprehensive view of energy systems and supports sector coupling, showing how electricity, heat, and hydrogen interact. It allows regions to identify demand patterns, renewable potential, and infrastructure constraints in a single analytical environment.

4. Decision-support features

The Energy Cells Model enables decision-makers to:

  • Run and compare multiple energy scenarios

  • Assess cost efficiency and renewable energy shares

  • Evaluate energy autonomy and external dependencies

  • Identify optimal technology mixes and investment priorities

These features transform complex data into clear, actionable insights, supporting evidence-based policy and investment decisions.
